The city’s population grew steadily from a few hundred residents in 1900 to more than a thousand in 1960. After World War II, Plano began to experience a boom in population. Tax changes and public works projects boosted the area’s economy. The city’s population increased from 17,872 in 1970 to 72,000 in 1980. The increase in population required the city to continue to upgrade its infrastructure and maintain its grid layout.
