Located northeast of Dallas, Texas, Garland is a suburb of Dallas. The city is a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and is almost entirely within the Dallas County area, with small portions located in Collin and Rockwall counties. The majority of locals in Garland are affiliated with a religious denomination, including the Presbyterian and Methodist churches. The city’s Protestant population is made up of approximately 60% members of the Roman Catholic Church, the largest Protestant group in the United States. The city’s largest non-Christian denomination is Islam, which is also a majority faith. In addition to Christianity, Garland is home to the Diocese of Dallas, the sixth largest religious jurisdiction in the United States.

During the nineteenth century, Garland began to grow and developed. The city’s first incorporated communities were called Duck Creek and Embree. The area was primarily an agricultural community, with cotton as its primary crop. In 1886, the Santa Fe Railroad bypassed the old community and created a new one, Embree. After the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad, the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad constructed a station near the two communities and called it new Duck Creek.
